The Begin of Political Parties in The United State.

Not everyone agreed with the ways Hamilton solved the country’s money problem. Thomas Jefferson was one who disagreed. He did not want a strong federal government. He felt that Hamilton represent wealthy business people who wanted a strong central government to help their trade. People like Jefferson wanted the states to be strong. Other people did not like the taxes they had pay.

People who agreed with Jefferson began calling themselves Democratic Republicans. People who agreed with Hamilton wanted a strong central government that would help trade grow. They became known as Federalists.

The constitution did not mention political parties. George Washington never belonged to one. But when strong people represent different ideas, it seems natural for them to have followers. Their followers begin to be called by words that show what they believe in. Hamilton and Jefferson stood for different ideas about what the new country should do. They stood for different ideas about what it should be. Their followers brought political parties into being.

Washington served two terms-eight years as president. The next president was John Adams, a Federalist, he won over Jefferson, the leader of the Democratic Republicans. During his term in office the Federalists passed some laws that many people did not like. Jefferson beat Adams in the next election. Jefferson became president in 1801.
